DEVO tional 2001

SSSick Scott Stanton

To all those that were there, it was truly great to meet you all in person. All the DEVO spudwazz, of course, was incredible, but to me, the best part was meeting all of you great friends!

To those that weren't there, you missed the DEVO-geeking day of a lifetime! I think I talked about nothing but devo from about 11:00am until 3:00am! I came home with 6 shirts, over 30 cd's, about 20 hours of DEVO videos, plus about 4 hours of video that I shot at the event, not to mention countless other spud items that I'm sure it will take me weeks to go through.

Aside from all the trading, the speakers & performers were amazing! What a truly special experience it was to meet General Boy & Jim Mothersbaugh! And we also got a guest appearance by Jerry & Bob2's brother Roger Casale. Rev. Ivan Stang was also hamming it up with great stories about his involvement in devo's videos & performances.

And the bands kicked ass! CD truth played a great set including covers of "37" & "Freedom of Choice". Marvelkind was also very entertaining, all dressed in matching red outfits & with flashing red lights strapped on. They played a couple of devo songs beginning with "G", "gates of steel" & "girl u want". Their original stuff was very cool also, reminding me of the cars in a way, but more high-tech.  The newly reformed Spudtalk band, The Spudboys, were truly incredible! Sure, they had a few technical difficulties, and they may have made a couple of mistakes here & there... but I have never witnessed a more DEVOted DEVO cover performance, on video or otherwise! And you've got to remember, most of these guys have never played together! They practiced in the basement with Rick using refrigerator drawers for drums! Seriously amazing!

Each band member was decked out in a different devo costume and they looked great! Scott Orsi wore a yellow suit so fresh-looking, I bet it had never been worn! He looked just like any given member of devo, if they were to get a tan & grow a goatee! Professor Von Marko, the bass player, was looking like he stepped right out of the peek-a-boo video with his black clothes & spudring collar. Rick, on drums not only had the FOC tour suit (like on the cover of DEVO Live) & energy dome, he even had the cool Alan glasses! And my favorite of all was Will, the guitarist. All day long I kept drooling over the DNFTF outfit lying on one of the tables. I have the pants, so you know I'm gonna drool when I see the "spring fashions" shirt!! Then here comes will, decked out in the suit and he's even got the silver visor over his eyes! When they opened with wiggly world & Will started doing the Bob1 move where he falls to his knees, I could barely contain myself! That was so rad! They all put on an amazing performance, and the guest singers were great too! Nick also played drums on Jocko Homo, which he said he hadn't done for several years. Considering that he just got up there cold & did it, he did a killer job!  I'll be posting photos one of these days, but other spuds will probably beat me to it because I've got a busy week ahead & then I'm off to Burning Man for 8 days!!  So once again, it was so cool! Thank you all! And if we ever have another one of these things, I'll definitely be there!!  LATER!!!
